George H. Burr Collected Papers on the Quaker Separation

Overview

The Burr Collection includes manuscripts which document the Hicksite position during the Separation of 1827/28 in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the trial over the Crosswicks School Fund. It is directly related to the Southard Papers/RG5/312, which contain a more complete description of the controversy. It also includes Burr's manuscript on the History of the Society of Friends which he compiled for Southard as background in preparing his case representing the Hicksite position.

George M. Justice Memorandums, 1825-1861

Overview

George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

Elbert Russell Writings

Overview Elbert Russell (1871-1951) was a Quaker teacher, historian, and writer. His was a leading voice in bringing the insights of liberal, British Friends on the primacy of revelation and the importance of scholarship in the renewal of faith into American Quakerism. He was professor of Bible at Earlham College starting in 1895 and also served as chaplain. He resigned his position in 1915, later taught at Johns Hopkins, and then became Dean at Duke University. Trenton Friends Association Records

Overview

The Trenton Friends Association was formed in 1892 in Trenton, New Jersey, to promote “a thorough knowledge of the history and testimonies of the Society of Friends.” Meetings were held monthly, except in the summer, in the Trenton Friends meeting house. Papers were presented on a variety of topics. The collection contains minutes, constitution and bylaws, and manuscripts of papers read at meetings.
